“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

- Tao Te Ching

I practice Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture. TCM is a healthcare system based on ancient principles that date back nearly two thousand years making it one of the oldest health care systems in the world. It has a very positive model of good health and function and looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. The overall aim of acupuncture treatment, then, is to restore the body's equilibrium.

What makes this system so uniquely suited to modern life is that physical, emotional and mental wellbeing are seen as interdependent, and reflect what many people perceive as the connection between the different aspects of their lives.

Subtle diagnostic techniques are used that have been developed and refined for centuries. The focus of diagnosis is on the individual, not the illness and all symptoms are seen in relation to each other.   One way of describing this is “treating the root, not the branch”.

Traditional acupuncture believes that the underlying principle of treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body's qi, and vital substances (such as blood), cannot flow freely. There can be many reasons for this; emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury are among the most common. By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to re-establish the free flow of qi and vital substances to restore balance and support the body's natural healing response.

Acupuncture offers a holistic treatment that aims to address the underlying cause of the condition, as well as the symptoms. This approach links the body, mind and emotions.

I have had acupuncture for many years for various health problems and my experience has been that some problems were solved and others benefited from the treatments.
